Long-fiber-reinforced thermoplastics (LFTs) are of great importance, especially in the automotive industry. This is because they are uncomplicated to process by injection molding. Another advantage of LFTs is that they offer the possibility of weight reduction while maintaining high load-bearing capacity.
LFTs are manufactured using an extrusion process that SKYi has patented. This technology, developed by SKYi, produces long glass fibers embedded in impregnated polymer granules. The resulting material is suitable for injection molding, sheet pressing and extrusion molding.
In this innovative technique, fiber strands are drawn through a polymer melt and embedded in a polymer matrix during this process. During the cooling process, these strands are granulated. Due to the possibility of choosing different polymer matrices and fiber materials, the variety of possible LFT materials is large. The range of grades includes glass fiber and carbon fiber types.
